It was not until I left home that I began to attempt drawing and watercolours while attending university.
The painting and drawing courses I took taught me useful techniques and exposed me to different styles and media. I began to create cards and craft items which I sold at the market and at vendors’ outlets.
I have always written journals and poetry, and I began to publish these in literary magazines, to perform at readings and conferences. I joined writing groups, as well as the Canadian Authors Association.
I embarked on a busy teaching career with many interests which provided great material for my three main passions: writing, art, and photography. Hiking, Scuba diving, and world-wide travel have provided excellent opportunities for creative activities!
A member of SOYRA, I have exhibited my work in juried shows, and I have continued to enter poetry contests and photo contests periodically over the years. Poems have been published in anthologies and photos in a National Geographic calendar.
In recent years I have taught art, both privately and at the Georgiana Arts Centre and Gallery. I teach watercolour, acrylic, pastel, pen and ink, print making, and mixed media. My favorite is abstract and experimental, because you just lose yourself in the process. It becomes a mediation.
This second short video takes you on a brief tour of some of Karen Watson’s paintings.
